A number of communities in the Coachella Valley have formed an organization for sharing ideas relating to
emergency preparedness. Most of these communities are in the process of forming Emergency
Preparedness Teams.
The objectives of this group are:
1. Increase preparedness among the citizens of our respective communities.
2. Encourage the creation of CERT-like teams to assist neighbors in a disaster.
3. Learn about Emergency Preparedness from each other.
4. Encourage each other.
This group meets monthly, except during the summer. Our 1.5-hour meetings feature a speaker discussing
some topic related to our objectives, such as recruiting volunteers, effective organization structure, and
how to create an Emergency Preparedness team. We also share ideas about what works and what does
not work.
This group operates under the guidance of the Riverside County Office of Emergency Services. The group
has taken the name "Desert Standardized Emergency Readiness Team” (DSERT—pronounced ‘desert’).
Currently our meetings are attended by from 25 to 30 people, representing 13 communities and
organizations in the Coachella Valley.
People interested in helping their communities or neighborhoods get better prepared are welcome to
attend. If you would like to be added to the email notification list send an email to JerrHill@aol.com and
specify DSERT in the subject line.
